Kingwood Dance Theatre, founded by Sheryl Rowland in 1984 when she saw a void in the performing arts and ballet performance in the Humble/Kingwood area, has been bringing classical, pre-professional ballet to Kingwood and the surrounding area on a consistent basis for almost four decades.  Sheryl Rowland began her training at an early age in Houston with Emmamae Horn and the Houston Ballet Academy.  She also trained in New York at the American Ballet Theatre School and the Ballet Repertory School. She danced professionally with the Houston Ballet and in summer stock at Houston Music Theatre.

Kingwood Dance Theatre is an honor company in the Regional Dance America/Southwest Region and brings professional level productions (both classical and contemporary) to the Kingwood/Humble community and the greater Houston area.  Kingwood Dance Theatre has continually expanded its reach and scope with a varied repertoire, including classical ballets, contemporary ballets, story ballets, pas de deux, and humour/satirical works.  KDT is a non-profit organization that offers each season the following:
Full-length production of The Nutcracker Ballet
Ballet Gala Performance at the Hobby Center
Full-length story ballet each spring on a rotating basis
(Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Cinderella)

The pre-professional  ballet company has always endeavored to fulfill its two-fold goal of presenting professional quality productions in the Kingwood community and providing ambitious,  talented dancers with increased and challenging performance opportunities to  enhance their training.

Past choreographers who have set pieces for Kingwood Dance Theatre include:
*Steve Brule
*Dominic Walsh
*Sandra Organ
*Virginia Hendricksen
*Jessica Hendricks
*Mel Tomlinson
*Katharine Larson
*Catherine Cogliandro
*Melanie Mennite

Many dancers continue their training at highly recognized dance programs and universities across the nation such as the University of Oklahoma, University of Indiana, University of Arizona, University of Florida, and Dominican University

Kingwood Dance Theatre's dancers have continued with professional careers at companies like: Rochester City Ballet (Rochester NY), Eisenhower Dance (Detroit), Ballet Evolution (Charleston SC), Ballet Theatre of Maryland (Annapolis MD), Oklahoma City Ballet (Oklahoma City)

In addition, Kingwood Dance Theatre's participation  in regional and national RDA festivals has provided tremendously positive experiences for the dancers and directors, raising their levels of self expectation, expanding their awareness of the dance world, and exposing them to an abundance of excellent teachers and creative choreographers.

In 2001 Kingwood Dance Theatre was graciously presented with the Stream Award , which recognizes artistic excellence, as well as cooperation with other regional companies in Regional Dance America.

During  the summer of 2005, 2008 and 2012 Kingwood Dance Theatre participated in the Young! Tanzsommer tour, a popular summer dance festival in Austria. Audiences of thousands flocked to see the "Stars of Tomorrow" perform in various venues,  including the historic Dogana Theater in Innsbruck to the outdoor theater at the Elisabethinum, a school for disabled children.

Kingwood Dance Theatre was represented in an international exhibition performance at the USA International Ballet Competition occurring in Jackson MS in 2006,  2010 and 2014.

Kingwood Dance Theatre currently presents out of  Kingwood's Nathaniel Center, the beautiful performing arts center on Russell Palmer Road, about 2 blocks off North Park Dr. To find out when Kingwood Dance Theatre will be presenting again and to find out more about this incredible organization, go here
