Hey Kingwood, Got Plans for Spring Break?

Lake Houston Partnership tagged interest

Partnership Lake Houston is more than a week into its month-long Walk Run Discover Lake Houston campaign (formerly Lake Houston 10K 5K), Presented by Tachus.

Corporate teams, nonprofit teams, avid runners and families are all joining in the fun. In years past, Primrose Schools has sponsored the Kids 1 Mile Run. This year, Primrose Schools returned as the sponsor of the virtual run where kids can run a 1-mile race on their own and post their best times to the race website.

There is also a competitive 10K and 5K race where runners can post their best times. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the campaign.

The Walk Run Discover Lake Houston committee is chaired by Corey Turner, Director of Sales and Marketing for McElvy Media Group and includes representation from all over the Lake Houston area.

“When we developed this event, we set an intention to get people outside and active to promote physical and mental health,” Turner said. “As a runner and father of two young children, I was interested running but also participating as a family. We teamed up with Humble ISD for some family-friendly activities, and they knocked it out of the park.”

Thanks to the ingenuity of Helen Wagner, Coordinator of Physical Education/Wellness K-12 of Humble ISD, anyone can practice these mindful spring break ideas any day, whether you are five or 85 years old.

“Since Spring Break falls in the middle of the campaign, we wanted to offer some ideas for families and their kids to do together, since we realize many families will not travel over spring break, but stay local,” said Wagner.

Here are some highlights of the Spring Break Staycation Activities:

Mindful Monday: Take a walk outdoors and look for five different trees or animals. Set your timer for 60 seconds, then take purposeful breaths focusing on how your body feels as you inhale and exhale for 1 minute.

Try It Tuesday: Visit a restaurant in your community and order something you’ve never tried before. Make a meal at home that incorporates 3 different colors.

Wellness Wednesday: Go to a local park in your community. See how many four-leaf clovers you can find.

Thoughtful Thursday: Take a moment and write down five things you are grateful for, and share them with someone close to you. Write a thank you note or text someone who has impacted your life positively.

Feel Good Friday: Give a compliment to someone. Listen to your favorite tunes as you Walk Run and Discover Lake Houston.

Scavenger Hunt Saturday: On your walk or run today, bring your phone or camera and try to find the following items and post pictures to #walkrunlakehouston: a yellow flower; tree/piece of bark; a river, pond or stream; three different leaf shapes; a pinecone; a bird; three rocks: shiny, flat, knobby and a bird’s nest.

Funday Sunday: Watch the sunrise or sunset, pack a picnic lunch and visit a park in one of your neighboring communities. Unplug from social media and treat yourself to a day of self-care and exploration: yoga, spa, nails, backyard barbecue, yard games, visit a museum, volunteer to lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need.

According to Partnership Lake Houston CEO, Jenna Armstrong, Walk Run Discover Lake Houston took the place of our annual 10K 5K one-day event and has received a stellar reception.

“We could not be more pleased with the support we have gotten from our sponsors and the community,” said Armstrong. “Companies have formed teams, schools have formed teams and families and friends have really enjoyed spending time together outdoors. It’s been a win for all involved and is raising essential dollars to support our work with the business community.”
